When I was doing my exchange in ESADE I did an entrepreneurship class with a German Professor called Jan Brinckmann. I really enjoyed the class and it was one of the most useful classes I did in my MBA. Anyway, part of the class was to work with a startup to help them with a project. The startup I worked with was called 12designer. 12designer is a crowdsourcing portal for creative tasks: logos, flyers, websites…etc. For example if you need a logo for your company, you go to 12designer and create a contest to design a logo for US$500 for example. After 1 week you’ll receive let say 100 different logos. You choose the logo you like and give the winner designer the US$500. Simple and brilliant.
12designer is a German startup and focused on Europe with a diversified european team and more than 18,000 european designers. However, there was a bigger global competitor from Australia called 99designs. I know, there names are almost the same and very confusing.
Watch how does 99designs works below:
After I finished the project I realized that it is very difficult for 12designer to survive with the existence of a great company like 99designs. The founder of 99designs is also the founder of SitePoint.com, the most famous web professional market for Web Developers and Designers. However, I know that 12designer have an amazing asset of european designers and access to some big european markets. Today I heard a great news, 99designs acquired 12designer and now both will work together to deliver better experience to their customer, especially in Europe. I think it’s a smart move by 99designs and I think that 99designs is able to change how companies deal with designers for ever.
